The 1st Class Dining Car (also known as The Astrolabe)[2] is a lavish car capable of seating 32 first-class passengers and/or their guests. This entrance to the habitable part of the first-class was guarded by several armed bodyguards and staffed around the clock to provide the best service for it's passengers.
History[]
Season 1[]
- In the morning, Melanie oversees the 1st class passengers having breakfast and greets Martin, York, Robert, Lilah and LJ Folger. She also talks to Ruth discreetly from passengers, asking her to make an announcement at the Tail.[3]
- The day after Tailies' failed insurrection, Melanie and Ruth oversees the 1st class passengers' breakfast and listen to some concerns about the insurrection from Sharma, Robert, Lilah and LJ Folger.[4]
- Casino games are held in the car as a distraction for the First Class passengers. to make them forget about the train's damage from Cattle Car breach.[5]
- In order to search Nikki Genêt's murderer, 1st class passengers were ordered to gather in the dining car in the middle of the night.[6]
- In a morning while first class passengers are eating their breakfast, Clay staged an uprising by giving cockroaches hidden in a plate to Rajiv Sharma, Martin Colvin and Eugenia.[7]
- LJ's tribunal take places in the 1st Class Dining Car, First, Second and Third Class passengers are allowed to observe the trial.[7]
- The Dining Car acts as The Folgers', Commander Grey's and the Jackboots' base of operations and planning during the revolution.[8][9]
Season 3[]
After the theft of the Pirate Train, First Class was decommissioned by Joseph Wilford and the dining car was left frozen and abandoned, at -25 degrees, with food still on the tables, apparently because Kevin McMahon was too lazy to have it cleaned up. After her previous hiding place was compromised, Pike had Ruth Wardell hide out in the dining car which he was secretly feeding a trickle of power to, at -12 degrees.
- Pike has Ruth Wardell hide out in the freezing and abandoned 1st Class Dining Car after The Resistance's Hideout is discovered.[10]
- In order to by The Resistance time to disarm Wilford's EMP weapon, Ruth allows herself to be captured, siting at a table in the dining car and waiting for Kevin McMahon to find her.[11]
- Melanie Cavill uses the Dining Car as one of her main areas while preparing for war against Layton again.[12]
Technology[]
There is a pneumatic tube system which allows messages to be sent back and forth between The Engine. The public address system can be used in the car and was used so the train could listen to the L.J. Folger trial.
Interior[]
The interior consists of two rows of tables, on both sides of the car. The main dining room takes about one and a half floors, with stairs on each side of the car. The dining car also served as a multipurpose room when needed, like the trial of L.J. Folger.[7]

Trivia[]
- Presumably, due to the car's capacity and functions, there were 32 first-class passengers onboard Snowpiercer, before the revolution.
- However, the consist shown in Last Stop (09:17) shows another dining car of the same model. This is odd as there is not a mention of another dining car, but it makes sense to have more of them, especially in first class as the passengers would have more places to dine at. This most likely proves this theory false.
- In Season 1, the car used a normal 1st class car as it's exterior CGI model, despite a concept model already being made by Alex Nice, which briefly appears in Season 2's Smolder to Life. It was briefly used in Into the White, acting as a place-holder for the Library car as both cars share a similar exterior model.
- It is possible the dining car is car 17 out of 1001.[1]
- Props auctioned off after Season 3 confirm the dining car's name to be the Astrolabe.[2]
- An astrolabe is an astronomical instrument dating to ancient times. It serves as a star chart and physical model of visible heavenly bodies (astronomical objects).
