Gemini is a compound created by Doctor Nima Rousseau and his research team to denature CW-7 in the upper atmosphere and cause it to fall from the sky.
History[]
Background[]
Created by Doctor Nima Rousseau, he spent six years before the Freeze working on Gemini for an unknown reason.
Approximately six years into the Freeze, an incident caused Gemini to be released on Level 3 of the Silo. The level was locked down and the survivors were used as test subjects to study the effects of Gemini over time in an effort to better refine it. The Gemini survivors were left with burns and scarring, particularly on their faces. In reality, this was a coup by Captain Anton Milius in order to seize power from Admiral Kari Chang who had shut down the human trials with Gemini over Milius' objections. Believing that Gemini was the key to humanity's future and that Kari didn't have what it took, Milius seized power from her in order to continue the experiments and the mission.
About 7 years into the Freeze, the International Peacekeeping Forces launched a rocket carrying Gemini into the upper atmosphere. The compound then followed the weather patterns across half of the equator, causing the six warm spots, including the one where New Eden is located. However, Nima and his team needed the warm spots to grow, mix and feed off of one another into a web that extended across the planet in order to stop the Freeze. With half of the equator still in a deep freeze, there was no point, so they needed Snowpiercer to help launch the compound from the other side of the planet.
Season 4[]
Snowpiercer is hijacked by Admiral Anton Milius and brought to the Silo where Doctor Nima Rousseau greets Melanie Cavill and reveals the existence of Gemini and how it's intended to break up the CW-7 and end the Freeze. Melanie agrees to allow Snowpiercer to be used for the mission and she transfers to the Silo while Snowpiercer undergoes an extensive retrofit in order to allow the train to launch a rocket carrying Gemini from a car near the back.
Nine months later, with Andre Layton coming after Snowpiercer in Big Alice in order to get his daughter back, Milius attempts to have a variant of Gemini rigged up as a chemical weapon by Bennett Knox and Bess Till who eventually discover the plot. Rather than docking directly, Layton and Josie Wellstead are able to avoid the gas trap by jumping between trains in EVA Suits and board Snowpiercer further down while Nima works to disarm the trap.
As the time to begin the mission approaches, Nima shows Alexandra Cavill the rocket carrying Gemini and explains its importance to her. Nima reveals that a toxic side effect is responsible for the nosebleeds that Alex has been experiencing at higher elevations near the edge of New Eden's warm spot, but calls that version of Gemini a cruder version than what's being deployed by Snowpiercer as this variant has been refined Nima's testing on the Level 3 residents.
When Melanie returns, her data shows increased radiation levels and high toxicity. Combined with Alex's data from her work at New Eden with Mr. Sprinkles, Melanie realizes that it means that Gemini is eroding the atmosphere, threatening to bring about a second end to all life on Earth, this time a permanent one. However, Nima refuses to accept that he's wrong, hijacks Snowpiercer, and sets out to launch Gemini. In the process, Nima slips up and reveals that he's been working on Gemini for fifteen years which is six years longer than the duration of the Freeze.
Nima sets out to steal Big Alice from New Eden, needing both Engines to launch Gemini. Nima tells Alex that the current conditions won't reach peak position to launch Gemini and spread it across the globe for another five years if they miss their chance to launch this time, meaning that time is of the essence for their mission.
Description[]
According to Doctor Nima Rousseau, Gemini causes CW-7 to denature and fall from the sky, spreading on weather patterns to create warm spots in the Freeze that the world is caught in. However, a side effect is nosebleeds. People exposed to it also have burns and scarring across their faces.
Melanie and Alex's data later reveals that Gemini -- or at least the variant used in the effort to stop CW-7 -- has the deadly side effect of causing atmospheric erosion much worse than what was caused by the destruction of the ozone layer, resulting in increased radiation levels and oxygen depletion that threatens a second end to all life on Earth, one that won't ever be recovered from.
