The Greenhouse Section was one of the cars of Snowpiercer, providing the train with fresh fruits and some Front Section Passengers with a relatively quiet and relaxing place in the train.
History[]
Background[]
Select Economy Section Passengers were chosen as Tenders, people with knowledge in tending to and growing various plants.
Throughout the film[]
After taking over the Water Supply Section, The Painter draws Curtis Everett, Namgoong Minsoo, Yona, Andrew, Tanya and Minister Mason (who is handcuffed as a result of her surrender), Namgoong opens the door, going from the cold metal of the Water Supply Section into the Greenhouse Section, colored a mind-cleaning green and full of vegetation and plants. They are slack-jawed at the vision as they pass through, an old lady relaxing and knitting giving them a look. Andrew drinks from the mountain in-front of the old lady and Tanya picks a tomato from one of the planters as they enter the other half of the car, full of planters. The Tenders tending after the plants are confused, one of them asks if they're okay in Japanese, to which she replies yes. Another, a French woman, tells Tanya to not eat it, but Mason tells her they are friendly and won't bite, though jokes they might bite a tomato. The woman goes back to working as Namgoong grabs some fresh soil from one of the planters and shows it to Yona, who is displeased with it's taste and feel. Namgoong explains the Earth is covered in soil, though is distracted by a tree, Yona is also distracted, following the others into the Aquarium Section, with Namgoong follow them afterwards.
Egg-Head later passes through the Greenhouse Section to hand out New Year Eggs to the Tenders, moving into the Water Supply Section.
Later, the old lady and the tenders look outside at the vibrations of the avalanche fast approaching, which ends up derailing and destroying the train moments later.[1]
Technology[]
The Greenhouse Section features 2 ventilation fans at both ends. Pipes run through high above, with sprinklers to sprinkle water onto trees and plants from above, as well as pipes running onto each of the planters, which feature photosynthesis lights above each of the baskets of soil and plants.[2]
Interior[]
The walls and roof are covered with glass, providing the vegetation with the sunlight that it needs. One half of the car is covered in flowers and trees in classic planters, a decorative fountain placed in the middle of them alongside a straw chair in the corner and round, glass planters, one on the floor and the others dangling from a bar high up. The other half features trees and planters, the latter equipped with photosynthesis lights for each basket, for growing plants such as tomatoes, lemons, oranges and grapes. High above runs bars and pipes, the former of which is used to dangle glass planters and hang clotch covers above in the planters half of the car, the latter equipped with sprinklers to feed the plants and trees, as well as supply water to the planters with extra piping. On the up-train end of the car are 2 more trees. All of them help decorate the barren metal of the floor and walls on each ends of the car, the latter being equipped with 2 fans for ventilation.[2]
Exterior[]
The exterior is equipped with a large number of glass, running from end to end on both sides and the top, alongside a higher roof.[3]
Trivia[]
- There is an inconsistency between the exteriors, one scene shows the Greenhouse Section with a section of the roof higher than the rest of it, while another shows a consistent roof height.[4]

The exterior during the Spiral shootout. Although blurry, the roof does not match.
Something to note is that concept art of both versions exist:
The full-roof is likely the finalized design as the interior does not feature the same hump, but rather a continous, smooth roof.
