The Library Car is where First Class passengers could read and relax during their trip and remember the world before the Freeze.

History

Background

The library car presumably existed before the Freeze, as a place for first class passengers to have access to lots of reading material.

Season 2

In The Time of Two Engines, it's revealed that there's a Library Car. One of the things Mr. Wilford demands is the book Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

Season 3

In The Tortoise and the Hare, the Pirate Train crew uses the Library Car to hold Miss Audrey prisoner. After Audrey escapes, Alex states that she told the others to lock her in the meat locker, but they thought that the library was more secure.

Season 4

In The Sting of Survival, after taking control of the train, Admiral Anton Milius meets with Miss Audrey in the Library Car, noting how lavish it is compared to what Milius and his people were forced to endure.

In A Moth to a Flame, Doctor Nima Rousseau uses the Library Car as his headquarters as Snowpiercer leaves on its mission to launch Gemini.

In By Weeping Cross, Nima meets with Mrs. Headwood, Wolf and Ace of Spades in the Library Car to plan out their attack on New Eden.

Technology

The library has a secret storage compartment behind one of the shelves, by the tables, which contain cigars and alcohol. There is also a phone on the second floor for communicating with the Engine.

Interior

There are 2 doors which connect the library to the hallway. The library's interior is similar to other first class cars, with lots of lavish wood paneling similar to the Radio Room. There is plenty of seating on first floor where most of the books are located. There is also a cage (presumably for restricted material), which was used as Audrey's cell during the travels of the Pirate Train. There is a spiral staircase which leads up to the upper floor, containing more books and other artifacts. For the ceiling, there is a colorful skylight detailed with a large hanging Earth sculpture. Potted plants hang from the handrails down like the hanging Earth. Also on the upper floor is a observation room at the front of the car for sight-seeing (albeit through 2 small windows). In the lavish observation room, there is a little more seating, as well as a cabinet, a small model of the solar system that hangs from the roof and 3 clocks which show what time it is for London, New Delhi and Seoul.

Exterior

The exterior of the Library Car bears a resemblance to the Dining Car, with the library having more windows on the sides and having a section that protudes upwards at the front (as opposed to a smaller front dome) for the observation room with 2 small windows on it's front.

Trivia

• Wilford was kept here as a prisoner for most of season 3.
• There is a photo at the top of the stairs containing the Engine in multiple color design variants. Interestingly, it seems to differ from the finalized design used for CGI shots but is not used anywhere else.
• The library has a TV and a restroom.
• The cage on the first floor (presumably for restricted material) was used as Audrey's jail cell on the Pirate Train.
• There is a Big Alice Engine Model in a case.
