The Sub-Train is an utility floor on Snowpiercer. It is a tunnel running the entire length of the train that houses technology and mechanical parts of the train, as well as a multi-purpose overhead track.
History[]
Background[]
Tunnelmen did regular maintenance on the mechanical parts in the Sub-Train tunnel.[1][2]
During the Year Two Rebellion, the Sub-Train doors were sealed, but the Tailies compromised the hinges (locks) and managed to open them.[3]
The body of Sean Wise was found in a floor panel discovered by Jakes Carter when he was performing routine maintenance.[4]
Season 1[]
After being discovered as the murderer, Erik Sotto was corned in the Sub-Train of Utility Car (C0778), by the Jackboots and killed.
Before being killed, Erik shot a electrical box that later leaked and caused a electrical fault in Utility Car (C0778), the fault then caused one of the breaks to seize. A Breach team attempted to replace a motor to fix the problem, but it swings whilst being hoisted, killing Engineer Peter DiMarco and then falls down where it was removed, causing the train to buckle; numerous carriages rock back and forth. Later, Layton threaten to kill Melanie, after escaping the The Drawers, but she convinces him to let her fix the train. Melanie then goes outside to fix the master hydraulic by re-attaching the hydraulic pipe, but has trouble doing so as the train approaches the Torreta Canyon and derailment. Melanie is soon able to reattach the cable and the hydraulics come back.
During the Revolution, many Jackboots (at least 15) were killed in the Sub-Train by a large spike firing machine, manned by Big John, Jakes Carter, Tunnelman Hedges and several Tailies. When they ran out of spikes, Big John held of the Jackboots while the machine was moved to the next barricade, killing 2 before he fell.
Later, in the Sub-Train, a fight broke out between Sam Roche, Andre Layton and Nolan Grey and 2 Jackboots, but the two rebels were overpowered and Roche was knocked unconscious. Before Grey could execute Layton, Murray arrived with Strong Boy and Z-Wreck, whom he had rescued from the Drawers. The three overpowered Grey and his men, but Layton had them leave the Jackboots unconscious and flee with Roche uptrain for safety.
Season 2[]
When Wilford's sabotage of The Engine went wrong, the Tunnelmen were forced to manually disengage the bogie motors, so Big Alice could push with less resistance, in order to jump-start them.
During the rescue attempt of Melanie Cavill, Bojan Boscovic tried to disconnect The Aquarium, in the Sub-Train, by unlocking two J-Links. However he only unlocked one before 7 Jackboots stopped him and the car was destroyed soon after.
Season 3[]
After the separation of the Pirate Train, First Class became to frozen for the Sub-Train. Ruth Wardell who was leading the resistance, hid here (in a chamber behind vents), until she had to move to the 1st Class Dining Car, just in time.
Javier De La Torre and the Jackboots then built a EMP weapon, for the Pirate Train, in the Sub-Train of the first car of First Class.
Later, Pike, Lights and Strong Boy attempted to disarm the weapon but accidentally activated it. They then comprised the Sub-Train door to the outside and shoved the weapon along the Sub-Train rail, while they ran to another car and closed the door before the weapon smashed through the door to the outside as it opened and landed on the tracks before it went off.
After Melanie revealed to the train, that New Eden was a lie, Ruth and Alexandra Cavill had Melanie, meet with Layton and Bess Till in the Sub-Train to talk. However, nether Layton or Melanie could come to an agreement and Melanie left.
Season 4[]
After Snowpiercer is taken over by the International Peacekeeping Forces, the Sub-Train is retro-fitted all through-out with additional pistons and equipment for the Caterpillar System.

Trivia[]
- The Tunnelmen are responsible for maintaining the Sub-Train tunnel, hence the name of their department.[1][2]
- The Sub-Train is not accessible via the tail, however the Sub-Train tunnel still goes through the tail.[5]
- Tunnelmen and Engineers can put up semi-transparent membranes to close off areas for maintenance.[6]
- The Sub-Train tunnel has retracting doors at each ends of a car which closes it off from the outside.
- These doors could be sealed manually in the case of an emergency to block off access from one side to the train to another.[3]
- Big Alice does not have a sub-train, as the train has 2 floors throughout all of it's cars, one of the reasons why Snowpiercer and Big Alice needed docking cars.
- The cart was inspired by RDH Mining (later acquired by SMT Scharf)'s monorails.

- ↑ Visual clues in Season 4: Bess Till is in the tail's sub-train in The Engineer. Bennett Knox passed to Snowpiercer's side in-order to access the manual override, and when the J-Link doors shut, it trapped Till in Big Alice's side, which went to New Eden. Alexandra and Melanie Cavill inspect the work being done on Big Alice's side in Last Stop. As that section of cars wasn't coupled to Snowpiercer, it wouldn't have been at The Silo to receive the Caterpillar System retrofit, hence the work being done and them inspecting said work. They walk from the tail then to Big Alice's cars and then Big Alice's engine.
