During the time period after TNT announced they won’t be airing Season 4 and before AMC announced they had bought rights and were taking over, it was believed this episode could have been the last episode of the entire series.

Synopsis[]

TNT's: It all comes to a head as old adversaries clash, with New Eden hanging in the balance.

Netflix's: Determined to take Snowpiercer to New Eden, Layton threatens war to gain control of the engine, a move that forces Melanie to forge a new alliance.

Intro[]

Melanie: "I guess someone has to be the monster. The one who favors reason and shatters dreams. I've died and sacrificed my bond with Alex so many times for this train. To surrender now would render that meaningless. So maybe it was inevitable that the monster would be me."
Layton: "The original sinners, me and Melanie. I should've known it would come down to this. How else would we choose humanity's fate but by war..."
Melanie and Layton: "On Snowpiercer, 1,029 cars long."
―  Melanie and Layton's shared opening monologue.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Miss Audrey plays piano in the Nightcar as Melanie gets ready in her quarters, the Brakemen set up in the Market Car with Roche issuing orders that they're to keep the factions apart if any violence breaks out, and Layton Josie acknowledge that with Melanie's revelation about Layton's New Eden lie, there's no guarantee that the Tailies will fight for Layton. In the Engine Melanie asks Javi if he's ready for them to be the bad guys, but Javi tells her that if the passengers feel anything like he does about being lied to, then they aren't the bad guys, Layton, Bennett and the New Eden team are. Melanie admits that Joseph Wilford is still missing which they both know is a problem.

Oz interrupts Audrey who is not supposed to be in the Nightcar, telling her that if she's there, then the dam is breaking. Oz gathers his belongings, telling Audrey that he's talking about Wilford. Oz doesn't want any part of whatever Audrey is up to with Wilford, but Audrey insists that she's not on Wilford's side anymore. Armed with a crossbow, Jakes Carter enters the upper level and confirms that the car is clear aside from Audrey and Oz. Audrey returns to the piano as Wilford and his followers take over the Nightcar and set up their base of operations in it.

Kissing a visibly uncomfortable Audrey, the jubilant Wilford announces that he's making his move. With Layton's forces fighting from the bottom, Wilford is going to be smart and set up in the Nightcar between the two camps. Mrs. Headwood leads in Wilford's new Coldman: Boki who was rescued from the explosion of the Aquarium Car months earlier which was previously believed to have claimed the Breachman's life. Everyone but Oz and Audrey cheer on this development.

In the Hospitality Car, Melanie asks Ruth for her support and for Alex's location. Ruth guesses that Alex is with Layton, pointing out that Melanie has shattered her daughter's dreams too. Ruth reminds Melanie that they were going to New Eden in her honor and completing Melanie's mission, but Melanie states that her mission is to ensure their survival onboard Snowpiercer until they know that it's safe to get off. Melanie asks the conflicted Ruth to help her complete that mission and to serve the passengers as Ruth always has.

In Big Alice's Engine, Bennett reports to Layton that there's still no sign of Wilford and Javi's still not answering Bennett's calls, so Bennett hasn't been able to yell at his best friend yet, although both Layton and Zarah point out that that's probably not going to help. Bennett tells Layton that they have 24 hours until they have to make the turn for the Horn of Africa and while Bennett doesn't want to drop anchor yet, he can slow the trains down to buy them more time. Layton orders Bennett to slow the train down just enough to piss Melanie and Javi off and make Javi call them while Till arrives looking for Layton, revealing that Layton's side doesn't know where Alex is either. Zarah reports that New Eden still has support, but anyone who was on the fence about it is on melanie's side. Till adds that Ag-Sec has voted in favor of the train. Bennett points out that science still merits the risk that they're taking which Till knows, but clearly isn't happy about the lie and the effect that it's had.

In another car, the Tailies demand answers from Layton about New Eden being a lie. Layton confesses to lying and using dirty politics to try and bring the train together, but he asks his people not to let that overshadow what the Engineers have shown them is possible. Layton promises that with their help, he can get everyone there, but Layton can't promise that New Eden can support life long-term. However, the Tail knows that Snowpiercer can't support life long-term either. The Tail has suffered under Melanie's rule before, and they can't go back to that life. Knowing that Layton is right, Z-Wreck voices the Tail's collective continuing support of their leader and the crowd starts cheering.

Roche visits the Nightcar and he furiously confronts Wilford over murdering three of Roche's Brakemen in order to escape from the Library Car. Wilford apologizes and promises that they will be the last bodies that he drops in this affair, introducing Boki as some deterrence. Wilford claims that they don't want anyone coming in unannounced and apart from that, Wilford is just there to help keep the two sides apart. Not buying it, Roche announces to everyone that if anyone is in the Nightcar against their will and wants to leave, they can go with him right now. Audrey visibly considers leaving and Oz tries to go, but he is grabbed by the throat by Boki and stopped. The shocked LJ reassures Wilford that she's not going with Oz and Wilford has Boki literally throw Oz out as Audrey drinks. Boki -- apparently mute and now completely brainwashed to do Wilford's bidding -- snarls at Oz and the departing Brakemen and all but LJ and Audrey laugh at the display.

Ruth leads Alex to where her mother is waiting for her. Alex furiously confronts Melanie for being as ruthless as the stories about her say and making her move right after Snowpiercer had saved Melanie's life. Melanie urges her daughter to look at things objectively, stating that Alex has lost her way as an Engineer if she can't do that. Alex asks Melanie to speak to Layton before things go any further.

In the Sub-Train, Layton, Josie, Till, Melanie, Ruth and Alex meet up. Layton argues that most of the passengers are willing to accept the risk, while Melanie argues that Layton never disclosed the risks to them. Layton is putting all of their eggs into one basket and the track is untested. Losing patience, Layton orders Melanie to take the turn, warning her that the Tail army will do it for Melanie otherwise. Melanie points out that it's a long march to the Engine, but Till states that Melanie doesn't have the forces to defend against them. Melanie is sure that she can hold them off for long enough, but Ruth wonders what will happen then, if it will just be more endless seesaw battles for control of the train. Melanie refuses to do anything but wait until they know that they're right. Alex speaks up on Layton's side, urging Melanie to change course and telling her that they young people want to get off of the train, but Melanie refuses to risk her daughter without knowing that it's safe. Alex refuses to join Melanie unless she takes the turn, firmly siding with Layton. Unable to reach a resolution, Melanie leaves and Ruth -- exasperated by two friends' stubbornness -- decides to go with her, telling Layton that this isn't over yet and he has to figure something out. Till grimly notes that they have to make a move now.

Layton and his army rush to take control of Ag-Sec and the food supply and the seed bank stored there, shoving their way past Ag-Sec workers who are just doing their jobs. A furious Javi calls Bennett to demand answers as to why they're slowing down. After at first denying it, Bennett tells Javi that it's just a little resistance and slows down even further as he hangs up the phone. Zarah asks Bennett to look after Liana for a minute while she goes off to do something. Upon reaching the last greenhouse, Layton has his forces set up there, unwilling to risk triggering the first clash. Josie reports that their forces uptrain are hiding and ready if they're needed.

Oz enters the greenhouse and Till lets him through the Tailie shield wall. Oz reveals that Wilford took the Nightcar with about a dozen guys and Boki who is Wilford's new Coldman, surprising Layton that Boki's still alive. Till is concerned to hear that Audrey's in the Nightcar too, but Oz isn't sure if Audrey's in there against her will or not. Layton figures that Wilford and Audrey are back together again, but Till is sure that Audrey hasn't gone back to him and that she can't, not explaining why she's so sure.

In the Nightcar, Audrey asks LJ for another drink, acting similar to how she did when she was with Wilford, telling LJ that no one is safe. Annie reports to Wilford that Zarah's waiting for him in the backroom. Wilford greets Zarah who knows that this situation is something that Wilford is greatly enjoying: he's going to be fanning the flames until Wilford is the last one standing. Zarah wants to make sure that their arrangement still stands and that her daughter will be safe no matter how everything plays out. Wilford reassures Zarah that he intends to honor their deal, and he knows that Zarah does too.

In 1st Class Dining, Ruth reports to Melanie that Layton took Ag-Sec without firing a shot and Layton's people stuck with him. Layton now holds all of the cards and Roche won't fight Melanie's war. Roche serves the people and Melanie no longer has the pull that she once did amongst the passengers. Despite her own reservations at the idea, Melanie decides that she needs Wilford's help, certain that she can control him. Melanie is convinced that New Eden is too dangerous to attempt, and she is willing to stoop to whatever level it takes to protect the last souls on Earth despite her moral reservations about what Melanie feels she must do. Melanie is willing to sell her own soul to protect everyone else's, but Ruth refuses to have any part of it, telling Melanie that she's spent too long redeeming herself for her mistakes to go back now.

In the Nightcar, Melanie watches as the Wilfordites take turns hitting Boki who doesn't even flinch. Wilford explains that Headwood upgraded the Cold Treatment's side effect of loss of sensation into Boki being impervious to pain. Wilford calls Boki their finest Breachmen yet who is ready for the field with no protective suit required. Melanie notes that that's a good thing since someone from Layton's side has stolen all of the breach suits. Wilford tells Melanie that she's a legend, so Melanie does have some support from former Firsties, some Guilds and others. However, Melanie is both militarily outmatched and down in the polls so she needs Wilford's help. Melanie admits that she believes that if she and Wilford were seen as united, then the majority of the passengers would choose the train. However, Wilford tells Melanie that it still comes down to fear, whether it be fear of Layton's colony or fear of the train that got them this far. Melanie lays out her terms: she remains as Head Engineer while Wilford retires from Engineering altogether and Snowpiercer is her train. Assuming generous comforts, meaningful consultation, and if Wilford maintains control of certain interests of his such as the cold treatment as well as Melanie's shame at cutting a deal with him, Wilford agrees. The two shake hands as the Wilfordites cheer.

Ruth makes her way to the Resistance's Hideout where she finds Lights. Ruth explains that she had thought that Layton would hide a team up there and she guesses that the team is going to be just her and Lights. Lights reveals that she had stolen all of the breach suits and is waiting for more orders. Ruth decides to fill Lights in later and asks how she's communicating with Layton. Much to Ruth's delight, Lights reveals Ruth's old rat friend.

An incredulous Roche meets with Melanie and Wilford and Melanie explains that they're hoping that together they tip the scales, and Layton won't go to war over New Eden without a majority. Roche points out that Wilford is unlikely to just take a backseat, disbelieving of Wilford's claims to be just a trusted advisor in all of this. Melanie asks Roche to take his men down to Ag-Sec and stand in Layton's way with Wilford trying to take credit for the idea. Melanie wants to prevent violence and to show Layton that the power has swung her way.

Roche gathers the Brakemen to block Layton's advance. Winnie runs into the greenhouse with a warning that the Brakemen are coming, and Layton realizes that Roche had picked a side in the conflict rather than remaining neutral like he'd expected Roche to do. Roche calls out to Layton that Melanie and Wilford have joined forces against him, apologizing that the numbers show that Layton doesn't have the mandate now. Roche argues that Layton can't force people to the promised land, but Layton refuses to be forced back to the Tail either. Clearly not happy with the situation, Roche gives the army two hours to discuss it amongst themselves and stand down, but Layton delivers an immediate refusal and asks the Brakemen if they are really ready to do this. Layton's army begins preparing themselves, leaving the Brakemen visibly worried. Roche tells Layton that he needs to come up with a better idea to resolve the escalating situation fast. However, while the Tailies don't want blood, they are ready to fight for their chance off of the train if it comes down to it.

Alex enters the Engine and tells her mother that she made her choice as had Melanie demanded and left her friends to be with Melanie. Melanie regrets forcing her daughter into that position while Alex is furious as she's sure that some of her friends are going to die tonight in this war that her mother had started. Melanie insists that she doesn't want that, but Alex refuses to hear her out and locks herself in Melanie's room.

Josie gets a message from Lights that she's uptrain with Ruth and they're ready. Till reports that they can punch through the Brakemen, but Layton knows that half of the people uptrain will fight with Wilford and Melanie while the other half are there against their will like Audrey who Till refuses to leave on the other side. Josie warns that the turn's coming up and they all know that there's going to be a cost. However, like Melanie, Layton doesn't want the coming bloodshed, and he insists that there has to be a better way.

From Big Alice's Engine, Layton calls Melanie who is now alone in Snowpiercer's Engine. Layton makes it clear that he isn't calling to surrender or to bargain, just to acknowledge. Melanie thanks Layton for allowing Alex to cross over, and Layton states that he had simply respected Alex's choice, but Layton knew that Alex would also be a double-edged sword. Melanie sadly admits that she'll probably lose her daughter by trying to save her and Layton quips that they've both got enough ego to think that they can save everyone. Both acknowledge that they've set themselves up in an impossible role, and it's hard to let go of the job once they've got it. Layton reminds Melanie that by letting Wilford be a part of that, she's falling right back into using fear to keep order, while Melanie reminds Layton that he went right back to shedding blood. Despite all of the time that has passed and everything that has changed, they have both fallen right back into the patterns that they had tried so hard to change after the revolution. Layton and Melanie both know that whether this ends by fear or by blood, Wilford is the one who wins, and they are both the ones who lose unless they find a way to break the endless cycle that they're stuck in.

In the Nightcar, the ecstatic Wilford marshals his forces to go downtrain to confront Layton's army. Wilford asks Audrey to play a song for the massing troops, but Audrey finally finds her courage and refuses to do anything for Wilford anymore. An upset Melanie arrives with the news that Layton is refusing to back down. However, Melanie refuses to order an attack on Layton and tells Wilford that if he wants to remain relevant, Wilford needs to help her to come up with another solution. Wilford admits that he has something that's less bloody, but requires dark maneuvers on a more personal scale: Wilford has access to Layton's daughter who he will do anything for. Shocked, Melanie calls using the enemy's child something straight out of Wilford's playbook which he unapologetically calls a proven remedy. Melanie reluctantly agrees to go along with Wilford's despicable plan.

Zarah sneaks out of Big Alice with Liana with Headwood's help. Heading to meet with Zarah, Wilford gloats that Melanie will thank him for this one day when she's an old woman watching Alex at the helm which she sincerely hopes will happen. Wilford enters a cold lock where Zarah is waiting for him with Liana, only to have Melanie suddenly lock Boki out and for Layton to emerge from hiding armed with a spear. Ruth strikes Boki from behind with a shovel to no effect and lures Boki down the corridor to where a hidden Lights is waiting to open a celling grate into Boki's head, knocking him unconscious.

The impressed Wilford realizes that Melanie and Layton had formed an alliance against him and Layton explains that they've decided to come to an amicable resolution, but one that doesn't involve Wilford. Audrey and Till join the rest of the group as Melanie opens the Track Scaler, revealing that she and Layton came up with this solution of exile for Wilford together. Melanie made it six months in the track scaler which is loaded up with suspension drugs, stimulants and a timer. Wilford can only stay under for so long before he will have to wake himself up and figure out where he is. Wilford calls them all cowards for being unable to simply kill him, but enters the track scaler nonetheless. Finally free of Wilford's toxic influence on her, Audrey says a final goodbye to the man who she had once loved and moves to stand with Till, taking the other woman's hand. Once the others have left, Layton and Josie hook up the track scaler and Bennett lifts it out onto the tracks with Snowpiercer's crane arm. Declaring that they'll now see who the real survivor is, Wilford puts himself into suspension as the track scaler departs, heading in a different direction than Snowpiercer.

United once again, Layton and Melanie prepare to publicly address the train together, having found a good way forward, although Layton knows that the ones that they love will be the cost. As the passengers listen, the two explain that they have reached a compromise: the answer to the dilemma is individual choice. The train will be divided in Ag-Sec, and every passenger will be allowed to choose whether they want to stay aboard Snowpiercer with Melanie or go to New Eden on Big Alice with Layton. Layton warns everyone that chooses New Eden that they have no idea what they'll find there, the journey will be dangerous, and it will require a leap of faith and, more importantly, the desire to build a new society. Melanie tells those who remain aboard that life will continue to be hard on Snowpiercer. Bit by bit, the train is breaking down, but they will no longer add to that hardship with oppression. The train will run on science and truth and the passengers will share the burden of their limited resources together rather than everyone being divided as they had been in the past. Layton urges everyone to, no matter their own choice, find hope and respect in their neighbor's fate, and talk to their families and say goodbye to their friends. In just under six hours, Snowpiercer and Big Alice will separate to go on their own journeys. Around the train, people contemplate their futures, Headwood treats Boki, and Bennett and Javi share a toast in the Engine.

In the Nightcar, Audrey tells Till that she was the best version of herself when she ran the Nightcar and Till showed her that. Audrey has something to give here with her gifts and she needs to stay on the train. However, Till has been dreaming of getting off of Snowpiercer for a long time and she can't see a life for herself onboard the train anymore, even if she loved Audrey. Barely holding herself together, Till promises to see Audrey again before the trains split and leaves. The heartbroken Till goes to Roche's quarters where her friend comforts her. Roche reveals that he and Carly are going to New Eden too, Roche having left the choice up to his daughter who is all too eager to leave the train.

In the Engine, Bennett, who is planning on going to New Eden, tells Melanie that if she's lucky, she will hop from crisis to crisis and keep Snowpiercer going for another decade, maybe two. Melanie tells Bennett that she needs him, and Bennett states he needs her too, reminding Melanie that he had followed her science to the decision of getting off of the train before Melanie had nearly killed that. Melanie insists that it's still in their future, it's just further down the line, and Melanie is sure that they can get there if they're together. Bennett is willing to stay with Melanie to the end of the world, but if she wants him to stay, then she must fully commit to him, something that Melanie has always avoided doing in the past despite the couple having been in love with each other for over 15 years. Kissing her boyfriend, Melanie promises that she is, and Bennett declares that New Eden can wait.

Elsewhere, Miles tells Layton and Josie that Melanie and Bennett are the best Engineers that there's ever been, and he needs to stay on the train and continue learning from them. The two accept his decision and share a hug with him before Miles departs, promising to see them again at the break point. Layton and Josie watch heartbroken as their adopted son leaves, but they know that everyone has to choose their own path. Layton promises Josie that there's enough pieces of them left for them to put themselves back together. Josie tells Layton that she's with him and they kiss.

In the Market, a despondent LJ tries to get a drink without success as people move up or downtrain around her based on their decisions. Having decided to go to New Eden, Oz tries to convince his wife to come with him, but she accuses Oz of chickening out from her and from the chance at power for an uncertain future. However, Oz likes the uncertainty that comes with making this leap of faith and he looks forward to the possibilities before him that New Eden represents. Oz tells LJ goodbye, and she declares that she is going to drop the Osweiller from her name, insisting rather unconvincingly that she's going to come out on top and she's a survivor. Once Oz is gone, LJ begins to cry, showing that she truly did love Oz despite her psychopathy and LJ wasn't just using him like she had been with Erik Sotto.

In her room, an emotional Melanie packs her daughter's bag for her. Melanie gives Alex her jacket, the one that Melanie had survived in. Both crying, Melanie and Alex hug. Alex needs to go to New Eden which Melanie knows. Alex doesn't remember what the Earth is like unfrozen, and she wants to find out. Despite how much it breaks her heart, Melanie respects her daughter's choice and is happy to have Alex with her right now. Alex reminds her mother that the train is falling apart, and the track is deteriorating, but Melanie tells Alex that she doesn't need to worry about her, they are both going to be ok. Melanie expresses her pride in her daughter and apologizes for all of the things that she did, and Alex forgives Melanie for her mistakes.

In the Hospitality Car, Ruth hands the Hospitality Department over to Tristan along with some final words of advice. Ruth flips Tristan's "W" button so that it's upside-down, now an "M" for Melanie instead of a "W" for Wilford. As Ruth leaves, Tristan announces that they are five minutes to separation and instructs everyone to make their final arrangements and to stay clear of the disconnection point. For those aboard Big Alice, Tristan wishes them farewell and good luck. In the Tail, the Tailies -- having all gathered in their old home for the journey -- stomp their feet and clap their fists over their chests as Layton and Till pass through the crowd.

As Snowpiercer begins to pass the switch track for New Eden, everyone gathers at the separation point in Ag-Sec. Looking at Miles and Alex, Melanie notes that they are now the guardians of each other's loved ones which gives Layton hope. Layton promises to look after Alex and he and Melanie warmly hug goodbye. Tristan counts down the last 20 seconds before separation, and Till decides that she can't lose Audrey, apologizing to Layton for him being the one that she has to lose. Hugging Till goodbye, Layton tells her to go get Audrey and Till runs to Audrey and kisses her as time runs out. In the Engine, Bennett separates the two trains and says goodbye to Javi who is driving Big Alice. Big Alice switches tracks and heads for New Eden, leaving Snowpiercer to continue on with its endless revolutions around the world.

In the Market, the despondent, crying, and now very much alone LJ sits in a corner listening to "Sealed With a Kiss." LJ pulls out her father's glass eye and places it in her mouth to play with in an attempt at comforting herself. A man passing by bumps into LJ, causing her to accidentally swallow the eye and begin choking on it. With no one around to help her or to care, LJ Folger chokes to death on the replacement eyeball that her father was forced to get after she poked his real one out while the song that she seemingly listened to while committing her brutal murders plays in the background.

Big Alice makes its way toward New Eden, but the track is so bad that it's impossible for Javi and Alex to find a good speed. If they go too slow, the railbed's collapsing under their weight while going too fast will cause the train to jump the washboard. Layton declares that they're just going to have to ride it out while the passengers brace themselves against the hard ride. The situation gets so bad that they start shaking the train's wheels off. Josie promises a terrified Winnie that it's all going to be worth it and they're going to be out in the sunshine soon.

In Snowpiercer's Engine, Miles, having apparently taken Javi's place as the third Engineer, notes that the train's energy distribution has improved which Melanie attributes to the loss of weight. Bennett can no longer see Big Alice on the satellite because the other train has hit bad weather.

In the Nightcar, a large crowd gathers to listen to Audrey sing "Blacklisted." Amongst the crowd are Doctor Pelton and Miss Gillies who are holding hands and the proud Till who is now the train's Lead Brakeman with Roche's departure.

On Big Alice, Alex confirms that they should've arrived at the warm spot by now, and Javi reports that the front of the train is hitting the old Trestle Bridge, alarming Layton. Javi simply quips that he hadn't wanted to worry Layton who sarcastically thanks his friend for that. The rough ride drastically worsens as the train crosses the bridge and Alex states that the valley up ahead should be the best place for a microclimate. Javi has Alex accelerate to full speed as the Engine hits the bridge. The train shakes badly as it crosses the bridge with sparks flying from the wheels and the bridge being torn apart behind them. Finally, Big Alice derails, but at a walkable tilt and with no casualties. Alex announces that they've reached the warm spot and detects temperatures of -10 and climbing which the two Engineers attribute to inversion. Javi shares the good news with the passengers as Layton notices that the snow on the train is melting.

Dressed in warm clothing, the passengers emerge from the train for the first time in years to find New Eden to be a habitable place with snow, but also a large body of liquid water and clear skies with sunshine, although no vegetation. Everyone enjoys their surroundings and the chance to build a new beginning, Roche and Carly hug, Zarah welcomes Liana to the new world, and Layton and Josie kiss.

Three months later, Melanie is driving Snowpiercer when she suddenly sees a rocket launch in the distance, and explode, sending pieces falling to the ground.

Layton: "Citizens of Snowpiercer, as the fork to New Eden approaches, I am proud to say that we have found a way through our impasse. We agree the only course is compromise, and the answer is individual choice."
Melanie: "The train will be divided at Ag-Sec. Every passenger will be allowed to choose between the train with me and New Eden with Andre Layton."
Layton: "Those who choose New Eden need to understand we don't know what we'll find there. The journey will be dangerous. And, yes, it will require a leap of faith. But more importantly, desire to build a new society."
Melanie: "Those of you who remain, we know that life will continue to be hard on Snowpiercer. Bit by bit, the train is breaking down. But we will no longer add to that hardship with oppression. The train will run on science and truth. And we will share the burden of our limited resources together."
Layton: "Thank you. Whatever your choice, find hope and respect in your neighbor's fate. Talk to your families. Say goodbye to your friends. The train will separate in just under six hours."
―  Layton and Melanie lay out their new plan together.

Tills: "So, what do you wanna do?"
Miss Audrey: "I was the best version of myself here. You showed me that."
Tills: "Yeah. What was I thinking? (Chuckles.)"
Miss Audrey: "I have something to give here, With art and who I am, and… and how I can heal people in my own way. I need to stay, Bess."
Tills: "I, um… I've been dreaming to get off this train for so long."
Miss Audrey: "I know."
Tills: "I can't see a life for me on Snowpiercer anymore…"
Miss Audrey: "Even if you loved me?"
Tills: "Even if I loved you. I'll, uh… I'll see you before we break."
―  Tills and Miss Audrey says their goodbyes.

Tills: "[Knocks the door.]"
Roche: "Oh, shit. Come here. Come here… Want a coffee?"
Tills: "Yeah. What are you gonna do?"
Roche: "We're going. What about you?"
Tills: "I'm coming with you."
Roche: "At least we'll be together. Anyway, I gave Carly the choice"
Carly: "I definitely want off."
Roche: "So that's what we're doing."
Tills: "Cheers, boss."
Roche: "Cheers, Bess."
―  Tills going to New Eden with Roche.

Melanie: "So how long do you think she can keep going?"
Bennett: "If you're lucky, you hop from crisis to crisis for another decade, maybe two."
Melanie: "I need you, Ben."
Bennett: "I needed you too. I followed your science to the decision of getting off. You nearly killed that"
Melanie: "It's still alive, It's just down the line. And if we're together I know we can get there."
Bennett: "I will serve with you 'till the end of the world. But that's only half of it. You want me to stay, I need the rest of you."
Melanie: "I'm here. [Sighs.] I'm yours."
Bennett: "Then New Eden can wait."
―  Melanie staying on Snowpiercer with Bennett.

Miles: "Melanie and Ben are the best engineers there's ever been. I need to keep learning with them. I'll be fine."
Josie: "Okay. Hey, One Tail. [Fist bump.]"
Layton: "One Tail. [Fist bump.]"
Miles: "One Tail. [Fist bump.] Always. Okay, no crying, I'll meet you at the breakpoint to say goodbye."
Josie: "Okay."
Layton: "Come here. [Group hug.]"
Miles: "I love you guys. [Walks away.]"
Josie: "Oh god. It hurts."
Layton: "Yeah, everyone's gotta choose their own path."
―  Miles saying goodbye to his foster parents, Layton and Josie.

LJ: "Well, he's a pilgrim now."
Oz: "There's still time to come with me, LJ."
LJ: "You're chickening out, from me, from power and for what? To go plant potatoes in an igloo? You don't even know..."
Oz: "Yeah. I like that part. Goodbye, Lilah Junior Folger-Osweiler."
LJ: "Yeah, I'm gonna drop the Osweiler! I'm gonna come out on top! I'm a survivor!"
―  Oz moves forward with his life while LJ faces her future with unconvincing bravado

Melanie: "Um… I may or may not have put a lot of socks in there. There's a first aid kit, and my jacket. You probably don't want it, but it's the one I survived in."
Alex: "I love you [Both sobbing.] I have to go. (…) I don't remember what the Earth is like and I, I wanna find out."
Melanie: "It's your choice. I'm just so happy that you're here now."
Alex: "Mom."
Melanie: "Yeah?"
Alex: "The train is falling apart. The track is deteriorating."
Melanie: "You know you don't have to worry about me, huh? I'm gonna be okay. And you will too. I love you."
Alex: "I love you too."
Melanie: "I love you so much. I'm so proud of you. I'm so sorry I'm so sorry for all the things that I did, I'm so sorry for—"
Alex: "It's okay. It's okay."
Melanie: "Okay. Okay. [Both chuckles.]"
―  Melanie packing things for Alex.

"Ease their journey, and keep them safe" And you don't need a protocol manual for that, Tristan.
— Ruth saying goodbye to Tristan, the new Head of Hospitality.
Citizens of Snowpiercer. We are five minutes to separation. Please make your final arrangements and stay clear of the disconnection point. For those aboard Big Alice… Farewell and good luck.
— Tristan's announcement before separation.
Melanie: "I guess we're guardians of each other's loved ones now."
Layton: "Well, that gives me hope. I'll take care of her."
Melanie: "I know you will. Good luck, Andre."
Layton: "Godspeed, Melanie."
―  Melanie and Layton say their last goodbyes.

Tills: "No, I can't do it. Um, I'm sorry you're the one I have to lose."
Layton: "Go get her. [Both hugs.]"
Tills: "Take care of each other."
―  Tills changed her mind in the last minute and stays on Snowpiercer with Miss Audrey.

Bennett: "Separating now. Goodbye Javi"
Javi: "Adios, amigo."
―  Two engineers of both trains saying goodbye.

Javi: "Buen viento y buena mar, Snowpiercer."
Translation: "Good wind and good sea, Snowpiercer."
―  Javi as the trains go their separate ways.

It's gonna be worth it. We're gonna be outside in the sunshine so soon, okay?
— Josie calming down Winnie while Big Alice is shaking.
Miles: "Solid numbers. Energy distribution's improved."
Melanie: "It's the loss of weight. [To Ben.] Can you still see them?"
Bennett: "No, they've got weather."
―  Snowpiercer's Engineers in the Engine.

Javi: "Alright, here we go. The front of the train's hitting the old trestle bridge."
Layton: "The what? You weren't gonna tell nobody about that?"
Javi: "I didn't wanna worry you, man."
Layton: "Thanks."
―  Javi alarms Layton with a last minute revelation.

Alex: "We're here."
Layton: "We okay?"
Zarah: "Yeah, she's okay. [To Liana.] It's okay."
Javi: "What's the temperature, Alex?"
Alex: "I'm reading… Um… It's minus ten. It's.. actually minus five now. It's climbing."
Layton: "Inversion?"
Alex: "Yeah, inversion."
―  Arrival at New Eden.

Passengers, we're in a warm spot and temperatures are rapidly rising.
— Javi making an announcement to everyone after arriving.
Welcome to the new world.
— Zarah to Liana after arriving at New Eden.

Trivia[]

  • The title of the episode is a line in Andre Layton's opening dialogue.
  • The train splits in two at Ag Sec; the front continues to travel around the globe, while the back makes the turn to the Horn of Africa in the hope to find New Eden.
  • For the first time in the series the opening monologue is spilt between two characters: Andre Layton and Melanie Cavill.
  • Big Alice's Engine is seen being manned for the first time since The First Blow, this time by Bennett Knox under Layton's command and then later by Javi and Alex.
  • Bojan Boscovic is revealed to still be alive, having been rescued from the Aquarium explosion, visibly more scarred and nursed back to health in secret by Mrs. Headwood as Wilford's new cold man. She also made the side effect of loss of sensation into impervious to pain.
  • The Tailies side with Layton along with the crew of the Pirate Train, Ruth Wardell and John Osweiller while the Brakemen initially work to maintain peace as a neutral faction.
  • Lights ran the resistance during the conflict and stole all the helmets of the EVA Suit's using The Resistance's Hideout from The Tortoise and the Hare.
  • Despite there being Jackboots, none are at the front line in the Night Car with Wilford or the episode.
  • Wilford is exiled from the train on Melanie's Track Scaler with a supply of the suspension drug and stimulants, just like Melanie had during her six months in the vehicle before her rescue.
  • When the trains separate, Sam Roche, his daughter Carly, Oz, Alex, Ruth, Javi, Mrs. Headwood, Boki, Sykes and the Tailies join Big Alice while Miss Audrey stays with Snowpiercer as does Miles, Bennett, Tristan, Miss Gillies and Doctor Pelton. After initially deciding to stay on Big Alice, Bess Till changes her mind and remains on Snowpiercer with Audrey.
  • Bennett suggests that Snowpiercer only has another decade or two at most if Melanie is lucky with all of the hardships that the train will face.
  • Miles is seen working in the Engine for the first time since The Train Demanded Blood.
  • Layton ends up with Javi and Alex as his Engineers which is a big change because typically, Layton is seen working with Bennett and Alex while Javi is mostly in a supportive background role. This was true even in Season 2 before the Pirate Train when Layton dealt most often with Bennett while discussing train matters while Melanie was gone.
  • The song playing in the background as LJ dies is Brian Hyland's "Sealed With a Kiss," the same song that she danced to in Without Their Maker as Layton realized that LJ was the serial killer.
    • Nikki Genêt also hummed it while under the suspension drug's effects, suggesting that LJ had listened to it while she was committing her murders.
  • The song that Miss Audrey sings as Big Alice travels to New Eden is "Blacklisted" by Neko Case.
  • Bess Till becomes Lead Brakemen, after Roche leaves for New Eden and Tristan becomes Head of Hospitality, after Ruth leaves as well.
  • Big Alice derails upon arriving to New Eden due to the track to the Horn of Africa being as bad as expected. But the Engine derails with only a walkable tilt, while the other visible train cars remain more or less upright. The passengers make it out unharmed and discover New Eden to be habitable.
    • The journey also wrecks the old trestle bridge that Big Alice crosses before reaching the valley. However, in Snakes in the Garden, the New Eden colony is seen repairing the bridge, in the hopes of Snowpiercer being able to join them.
  • The chosen spot for New Eden is a valley in the Horn of Africa that Alex states is the best spot to have a microclimate.
  • Three months after Big Alice arrives at New Eden, Melanie spots a rocket shooting into the sky and exploding. Later revealed to be a trap by the International Peacekeeping Forces in The Sting of Survival.
    • Showrunner Graeme Manson originally wrote The Original Sinners as the final episode of the TV series. The last scene of Melanie seeing the rocket was added only after Season 4 was greenlit and Paul Zbyszewski took over as the new showrunner.[1]
  • The derailment of Big Alice and the survivors emerging from the wreckage is similar to the end of the film where Snowpiercer derailed. Unlike in the film, everyone survived while only two children, Yona and Tim, survived the crash in the movie.
  • As revealed in Snakes in the Garden, the separation of the two trains leaves Snowpiercer with 879 cars. This means that Big Alice leaves for New Eden with 150 cars.
  • When Wilford arrives in the Nightcar and kisses Miss Audrey, one of the lights pointed at one of the balustrades flickers.[2]
