“ | Bunker Bravo Three Zero, Djibouti, under International Peacekeeping Forces command. We just call it the Silo. | ” |
— Milius introduces the bunker to Joseph Wilford. |
The Silo, or formally Bunker Bravo Three Zero, is a bunker and a military base located in Djibouti. It hosts and is in control of the International Peacekeeping Forces. The bunker is located in a mountain and has some kind of tunnel system in close proximity to it, which can be reached through the bunker. Each floor of the bunker is identical in construction, with the exception for elevators and staircases.[1] The tunnel is further connected to railroad track for Snowpiercer and Big Alice, built in three months before the events of The Sting of Survival.
History[]
Dr. Nima Rousseau and his research team were conscripted by the International Peacekeeping Forces when the weather turned, he and 80 other scientists and engineers where flown there by the US Air Force. They were tasked with "pioneering the next age for humankind," trying to reverse the effects of CW-7.[2]
Throughout the Series[]
Technology[]
The Silo has two floors of supercomputers.[2]
There is an infirmary on every other floor from Level 10 and upward.[1]
The Silo has access to large quantities of earth moving and construction equipment built to withstand the frigid conditions of the Freeze, some of which can be seen parked near the IFP's newly constructed railway switch.[2]
The insulative properties of the Earth's crust does not appear to be enough to keep the Silo warm, it still appears to require heating to maintain livable temperatures, as certain decommissioned sections of the Silo as well as its tunnel are cold enough to kill a person in minutes if they are not wearing protective equipment.[3][1]
The Silo contains a Jetway which mates perfectly with a door on Snowpiercer.[2] This allows the transfer of cargo and crew without the need for a cold lock and Breach Suits. It also connects Snowpiercer to the Silo's energy grid, allowing the train to idle without draining its energy reserves for hours at a time.[2]
